The Space Between The Waves

The Space Between the Waves is a weekly podcast where we slow things down and listen to what life is trying to tell us. Each episode begins with one of my morning posts, followed by a deeper conversation about the meaning behind the words — the lessons, the pauses, and the moments we often miss in our busy lives.

Inspired by beach walks, early sunrises, and time spent near the water, this podcast is about reflection, perspective, and finding clarity in the quiet spaces. No rush. No noise. Just real thoughts, real stories, and a reminder that sometimes the most important moments happen between the waves.

Meanwhile, I was lucky enough to be a part of riding the Freedom Train when it rolled through our hometown in 1976.
I still remember that feeling… being young, wide-eyed, and just taking it all in without fully understanding the weight of what I was seeing. And now, looking back from 2026, I realize just how fortunate I am to still be here to remember it.
The people who took me on that ride are no longer here. And someday, I won’t be either. That’s just the way life works. But that doesn’t take away from the gratitude of having been part of those moments along the way.
Life has a way of moving fast. Sometimes it feels like a roller coaster that never really slows down long enough to catch your breath. And in those moments, it can be hard to appreciate the ticket you’ve been given for the ride.
But the truth is, the ride is still going.
And as long as you’re willing to keep showing up, there are still new tracks ahead, new views to take in, and new memories waiting to be made.
Remember, today is just a good day to be thankful for where you are… and who you’re still becoming.
Have a wonderful day… see you on the radio.

Meanwhile, there’s a quiet kind of strength in getting through things you didn’t always feel ready for.
Some days test your patience. Some days test your focus. Some days just ask you to keep showing up even when the answers aren’t clear yet. And somehow, you do.
It’s easy to look at life and only measure the big moments, the wins, the milestones, the things everyone else can see. But most of life is built in the smaller spaces. The steady choices. The quiet persistence. The decision to keep moving forward when nobody’s keeping score.
That’s where a lot of the real growth happens.
Not in perfection. Not in everything going right. But in the simple act of not giving up on yourself in the middle of it all.
Remember, take a breath today and recognize that you’ve made it through more than you probably give yourself credit for. Even the days that felt heavy still moved you forward in some way and that counts.
Have a fantastic day… see you on the radio.

Meanwhile, it’s funny how days of the week carry their own kind of energy, like Thursdays.
You’re not at the beginning anymore, but you’re not quite at the finish line either. It’s that in-between stretch where most people either push forward or start looking for the exit ramp early.
But there’s something powerful about staying the course.
Not every day feels exciting. Not every step feels like progress. Some days just feel like showing up and doing what needs to be done, even when nobody’s watching.
And strangely enough, those are often the days that shape everything else.
The truth is, momentum doesn’t always look like movement. Sometimes it looks like patience. Sometimes it looks like persistence. And sometimes it just looks like not quitting when it would be easier to do so.
Remember, if today feels like one of those “in-between” days, you’re right where you need to be.
Keep going. One more day until the next turn in the road.
Have a wonderful day… see you on the radio.

Meanwhile, on the corner of Forever and Almost There, in a place where the sun shines most every day and everything you've ever wanted seems to be on the daily special, you'll find a little coffee shop called "Hope's & Dreams."
It's unlike any coffee shop you've ever visited. Your favorite song is always playing, the coffee is always fresh, and somehow everyone knows your name.
The faces change from visit to visit, but the conversations are always the same.
People gather there to talk about the places they'll go, the things they'll do, and the lives they hope to live someday.
It's a magical little place, Hope's & Dreams, and once you've been there, you find yourself telling everyone about it.
The Ancient Tiki leaders believed there was an interesting relationship between hope and dreams. They taught that dreams give us direction, but hope alone won't move our feet.
After all, a dream without action is just a wish waiting for someone else to make it happen.
They also believed that doubt has stolen more dreams than failure ever could. Most people don't fall short because they tried and failed. They fall short because they never started.
Throughout history, the greatest accomplishments were built on trial and error. Not because successful people avoided failure, but because they believed in their dreams enough to keep going when things didn't go as planned.
Remember, the first step is often the hardest one. Facing your fears head-on isn't a sign of weakness—it's the beginning of courage. Don't spend so much time hoping that you forget to do.

Meanwhile, have you ever stopped and thought about how much can change in just one year?
A year sounds like a long time when you're looking ahead. Yet when you look back, it feels like it passed in the blink of an eye.
Twelve months ago, you were worried about things that may not even matter today. You had plans, doubts, goals, and questions that seemed so important at the time. Some worked out exactly as you hoped. Others never happened at all. And somehow, life kept moving forward.
The funny thing about change is that it rarely arrives all at once. It shows up in small moments, quiet decisions, unexpected conversations, and opportunities we never saw coming.
Many of us spend so much time trying to predict the future that we forget to appreciate the journey we're already on. We analyze every possibility, worry about every outcome, and create storms in our minds that never actually reach shore.
kindness is one of the few things in life that never goes out of style, and compassion remains one of the greatest ways we show love.
Remember, there's no deadline on becoming the person you're meant to be. Life isn't a race, and there is no scoreboard keeping track of how quickly you get there. The important thing is that you keep moving forward.
Because nothing changes until you do... and when you finally take that first step, everything begins to change.

Meanwhile, have you ever noticed that sometimes the answer you've been searching for has been sitting right in front of you all along?
The funny thing about life is that the closer we are to a situation, the harder it can be to see it clearly. We convince ourselves that things are fine because they're familiar. We stay where we're comfortable because at least we know what to expect.
Yet deep down, there's often a quiet voice reminding us that it's time for something different.
Maybe it's a conversation you've been avoiding. Maybe it's a dream you've been putting off.
Maybe it's a decision you've already made in your heart but haven't acted on yet.
Change rarely arrives with a flashing sign and a marching band. Most of the time it shows up as a gentle nudge, a persistent thought, or that feeling that there's something more waiting for you just beyond your comfort zone.
The truth is, courage isn't the absence of fear. Courage is moving forward even when fear is riding shotgun.
Remember, it's okay to be scared. Being scared often means you're standing at the edge of growth. Sometimes the very thing you're afraid to do is the thing that will open the door to the life you've been hoping for.
Remember, take the step. Trust yourself. And when you finally reach the other side, don't forget to stop and enjoy the view.
Have a wonderful day... see you on the radio.

Meanwhile, my recent Facebook debacle—where years of memories, photos, and posts dating back to 2010 disappeared with the click of a button—got me thinking about just how connected we've all become to this crazy world of technology.
I guess it all started with AOL and dial-up internet. Back then, hearing "You've Got Mail" brought a sense of excitement and anticipation. Someone had taken the time to reach out, and somehow life seemed a little simpler.
Then came pagers, cell phones, emails, social media, video calls, and now we're connected every minute of every day. Yet for all the ways technology has brought us together, sometimes it can also make us forget the value of genuine human connection.
The reality is that digital memories can disappear in an instant. Accounts get deleted, platforms change, and years of our lives can suddenly be out of reach. But the people who truly matter remain.
Baltasar Gracián once wrote: "True friendship multiplies the good in life and divides its evils. Strive to have friends, for life without friends is like life on a desert island. To find one real friend in a lifetime is good fortune; to keep him is a blessing."
Over the past few weeks, I've been humbled by the messages, phone calls, and notes from people simply checking in, asking if I was okay, or telling me they missed these morning posts. It reminded me that while photos and posts may disappear, the relationships behind them are what really endure.
Maybe that's why I write books, record podcasts, and keep showing up every day. Not to preserve every memory, but to keep sharing the journey with those willing to travel along.
Remember, when all the technology fades into the background, it's the conversations, friendships, and shared moments that remain. May you always have someone in your life with whom you can start a conversation by saying, "Remember when..."

Meanwhile, I stopped at a small roadside café that sat just far enough off the main road that you could hear the wind instead of traffic. It was one of those places where nobody seemed to be in a hurry, and the coffee smelled like it had been brewing since sunrise.
Inside, an older man was sitting alone with a cup of coffee that had probably been refilled more times than he could count. He sat near the window, watching the palms sway back and forth as if he had nowhere else he needed to be.
We got to talking, and he said, “You spend half your life chasing things you think you want… and the other half realizing you already had some of them along the way.”
He didn’t say it like he was wise. He said it like he had lived it.
Outside, the wind pushed through the palms, and nothing in that moment felt rushed.
He told me there was a time when he thought happiness was always somewhere else. A better job, a bigger house, a different town, a different season of life. But somewhere along the way, he realized some of his best memories came from ordinary days he barely noticed while they were happening.
Sometimes the things we’re searching for have been sitting quietly beside us all along, waiting for us to slow down enough to see them.
Remember, as life rolls along, take a moment to appreciate where you are, and the small things that make the day a little brighter.

Meanwhile, there’s something about early morning light on the water that makes everything feel a little more honest. The world hasn’t fully woken up yet, and for a few quiet moments, it’s just you, your thoughts, and whatever the tide decided to bring in.
An old dockworker once told me that the tide doesn’t argue with anyone. It just comes in, and it goes out, no matter who’s standing there watching it.
He said people could learn a lot from that.
Some days you push forward. Some days you pull back. And some days you just stand still long enough to realize you don’t have to fight every current you’re caught in.
He looked out over the water and said, “The ocean never rushes, but it still gets everything done.”
Moving at your on pace of life is highly recommended if for nothing else your own sanity, those 24 hours are all the same regardless.
Remember, to slow your pace enough to see where you really are… and trust that you’re still moving in the right direction.

Meanwhile, the ancient Tiki Leaders were a peculiar bunch. Part philosophers, part fortune tellers, and part adventurers, they believed the best way to predict the future was to learn from the past. They taught that if you wanted a different life, you had to be willing to think differently, act differently, and occasionally paddle against the current while everyone else followed the crowd.
Trend setters they were.
One morning, while walking down an old fishing pier just after sunrise, I noticed a small group gathered around a fisherman. The morning air smelled of saltwater and bait, and the gulls were already arguing over breakfast.
The fisherman stood quietly near the end of the pier. He cast his line into the water and slowly worked it back toward him. Back and forth he moved the rod tip, patient and deliberate, the line tightened. With a quick snap of the rod, a fish took the bait.
The small crowd watched as he reeled it in and laid it gently on the wooden planks of the pier where it flip-flopped around in protest.
One man in the crowd shook his head and laughed. "How do you do that every time?" he asked.
The fisherman smiled without looking up. "By learning how not to do it every time," he replied.
The truth is, most people only see the successful cast. They don't see the hundreds that landed in the wrong place. They don't see the tangled lines, the missed opportunities, the fish that got away, or the mornings when nothing seemed to work.
Life is much the same way.
Every mistake teaches a lesson. Every setback teaches patience. Every wrong turn teaches direction. The people who eventually succeed are rarely the people who never fail. More often, they're the people who refuse to stop learning from their failures.
Remember, don't be discouraged by the casts that come up empty. Every attempt is teaching you something. Every setback is preparing you for the next opportunity.
One day, when someone asks how you make it look so easy, you'll smile and know the answer.
Have a fantastic day, see you on the radio.
